Why Did The Divorce Rate Surge During The Pandemic?
According to a new study, divorce rates surged by 34 percent in the summer of 2020 compared to the previous year. Many experts predicted that the pandemic, and the long shelter-in-place orders, would lead to an increase in divorce rates, and it seems that prediction has come to fruition. What was it about the pandemic that caused the end of so many marriages? Below are some of the biggest reasons for the increase.
A Lack of Personal Space
Couples generally like to spend time together, but they also need their own personal time, as well. With long quarantine periods and more people working from home, there was simply no chance for some people to have time to themselves. Many people also found that without being able to go out with other people or have friends over, the time spent every day with just one person was too much.
Money Issues
Money issues in a marriage sometimes lead to divorce, and the financial stress was too much to bear for many people during the pandemic. Some people were laid off from work, while others had to find a creative way to pivot their business. Sadly, some people had to permanently close the doors of their business. The pandemic brought with it a great deal of financial stress for millions of people and for some, that stress was too much for their marriage to take.
New Priorities
There were few positives about the pandemic, but it did give people a chance to reprioritize their life and for some people, that meant getting a divorce. The pandemic shone a light on just how short life really is, and how important it is to spend time doing the things they love. The new perspective led to many people making the decision to start a new life as a single and happier person.
The Pandemic Highlighted Unhappiness
Before the pandemic hit, the world was a busy one. Sadly, many people were in an unhappy marriage but they were simply too busy to notice it, or think about it. The pandemic gave people time back, and with so much time, many people started to reconsider things, including their marriage. Many couples were forced to make a decision once the pandemic hit. They either had to work out their problems or get a divorce. Many couples determined that their problems were too great to work out and so, they opted for divorce instead.
